“Dialogue: Working Together, We Work Better”
Workshops & Events (x CEUs):
- Dialogue: Working Together, We Work Better by Dr. Charlotte Baker-Shenk
- Two Panel Discussions: 1. Four Deaf People; 2. Three Interpreters- Share experiences and issues of concern:
* Little or no training for deaf or hearing consumers
* Lack of recognition or respect, esp those that administer programs for deaf people
* Need for agreeing on technical or "new" signs
* Importance of conveying voice tone and nuances to provide clues about speaker's attitude or intention, particularly on telephone calls.
* Need for interpreters to be flexible in meeting the needs of the deaf consumer on the job
* Need for skilled interpreters in sign to voice
* Need to look at the interpreter's decision making process
* Issues related to trust and responsibility both for the interpreter and the consumer
* Need for interpreters to recognize and acknowledge their limitations and deal with them openly and honestly
* Need for interpreters and deaf consumers to discuss feedback
* Deaf consumer's need to have continuity of services (interpreter should be willing to interpret through breaks so the consumer can interact with other participants)
* Need for flexibility in applying the code of ethics, especially for those in full-time positions.
